Not just calories

I recently read an article which said that the loads of companies were working to cut the calories in loads of foods, in an attempt to cut down on obesity.  It’s a very worthy idea, but just misses the whole point. Losing weight isn’t just about calorie reduction. And being obese isn’t just about eating too many of them. Sure, eating loads of food, way in excess of your energy output is never going to be a good idea, but calories aren’t the only factor. And the foods they are talking about aren’t exactly going to suddenly become healthy foods just because they contain less calories.

There is so much more to eating healthy than taking out the calories.  If you run, ride, row or race in any way, you need calories, and you need the right ones!

Take fat, for example.  The wrong fats won’t do you any good.  But good fats.  Well, your brain is made out of fat, so without fat, your brain isn’t worth anything.  You need fat to make hormones.  You need fat to digest your food.  You need fat for loads of other processes.  If you don’t eat fat, you can’t do any of them properly.  Good fats are found in fish, nuts, avocados, coconut and green leafy veg, for example. There are loads of other foods which are high in calories, but are amazingly good for you.

So please don’t judge a food just by its calorie count!

Join me for a Spring Break (aka ultra mini detox)!

I’ve just had a great idea!

You might be thinking that this is the time of year to sort yourself out.  Lose a bit of weight, get that cold gone or just get that spring in your step now that winter is heading out the window.  But where do you start?

If you are looking for a detox, this isn’t it.  If you want a fast-track lose weight and feel a million dollars in a day super-programme, this definitely isn’t it. But, if you want to give yourself a little boost and shake off those winter niggles, come and join my Spring Break!  And no, this isn’t a residential – you get to party in your own home! Yeah!

What am I talking about?  Well, just like everyone else, I’ve been lingering with something.  My back is playing up again (darn it), I’m just a tad ‘under the weather’ and it feels like this winter has been a long one.  I want the spring in my step, and I know what I need to do.  I need a break!  A mini-detox!  I don’t have time to spend a month detoxing, and I’ve got special events coming up, where I want to be eating cake, so it would be daft to do a huge detox.  So, for four days this week, I will be Spring Breaking and I want you to join me!

Think of it as a spring clean for your gut.  A mini-break for your belly.  Nothing crazy, no starving or anything that will mean you have to miss out.  Just you, good food and me teasing you nicely along the way (by email, of course!)

If this is tickling your fancy, click here.  But hurry.  I’m starting Tuesday, and I can’t wait!

Anti-oxidants. Yawn.

Anti-oxidants are sooo last season.  They are definitely not the cool kids any more.
Which is why this post is super short, so you can move right on to the next thing.
When you produce energy, you produce lots of free radicals. Lots of free radicals = damage.
Have your anti-oxidants before you exercise.  They snuff out the free radicals = no damage.  Or at least, less damage.
Simple.
There are loads of different anti-oxidants which your body needs to perform the aforementioned free radical snuffing.  A good start would be fresh veg and fruit.

See.  I said it was going to be fast.  You didn’t even get time for a yawn.  And if you throw in the phrase ‘free radicals’ when you are out and about, people will think you are super cool (that last bit was an exaggeration).

Eat yourself fit!

You know that exercise is only part of ‘getting fit’, ready to run, surf, ride, or whatever it is that you want to be fit for.  You know that ‘eating a healthy diet’ is supposed to be an important part of it too.

But seriously, how are you supposed to know what ‘healthy’ foods are?  And, since when has eating well been interesting? And,why does it actually matter anyway?

The problem is that if you are aiming to get fit, and you don’t eat right, you are just asking for trouble – injuries and tiredness might have to become your friends.  If you are looking to lose weight, and you don’t eat right, or do it too fast, you face becoming a yoyo dieter because the minute you stop exercising, it all just comes right back at you!

Fear no longer!  Be confused no more!  If you are up for finding out more about eating right for exercise, losing weight, getting fit, or even just how to eat better for life, this 4 week workshop at intouchstudios.co.uk is right up your street (and if you live near the Tobacco Factory in Bristol, then it is actually right up your street!)

Hooorrah!

You are supposed to sweat!

First of all, please don’t get me wrong. I am so not into smelly armpits and the last thing I like is the waft of someone who assumes that a surf in the sea is as cleansing as a shower!
But, If you are riding, or running, or whatever, and your goal is to get fit and lose weight, please don’t go slapping on the anti-perspirant before you head out.  Your pits are a great way of getting rid of the waste you produce in your body every day (and when you exercise or exert yourself), and if you clog up your sweat glands with anti-perspirant, then the rubbish has nowhere to go. Which isn’t a great idea anyway, but if you are trying to get fit, and especially if you want to lose weight, you want to get it out, and not sludging around your lovely bod!
I am not saying stink.  Be clean in all the normal ways; take a good shower and slap on a dab of your favourite smelly so that you don’t honk like an old skunk.  But, when you are out on a run or a ride, there is nothing wrong with sweating like someone who, well, is on a run or a ride.
You are supposed to sweat!

Hot burning lungs….

I don’t have asthma, so I really can’t claim to know how it feels when you just can’t breathe, but as a trying-to-start-running-a-bit runner, I definitely know how it feels when your lungs start burning and you can’t breathe in and you can’t breathe out.  Whenever I tried running as a kid, the lung pain was a big part of my reasons for giving up really quickly, and taking a leisurely stroll instead!  If that sounds familiar, read on:

That feeling, whether you have asthma or not, could be partly due to a really random reason.

You might well be dehydrated.

What?

Think about it.  When you breathe out, the air coming out of your lungs is damp.  It has water in it.  Water which comes from inside you.  And when you are exercising, you breathe at a faster rate, and more deeply than you normally do.  You breathe in a lot.  And you breathe out a lot.  And when you breathe out, you lose water.  If you don’t have enough water in you to start with, it’s going to get quite confusing for your lungs.  Breathe in = vital oxygen.  Breath out = vital water is lost.

It’s a simple equation, and one which is probably far too simple to provide the answers to a lot of problems.  But making sure you drink enough water (and seriously, I don’t mean drinking pints of the stuff – just being aware that your body is designed to run on water and not coffee is a good start!)  in advance of your training session can make a massive difference.  I know. I am the worst runner in the world.  But I don’t have hot, burning lungs when I run anymore!

If you try drinking more water before you train, and it really doesn’t make any difference, it might be time to think about a consultation – that’s exactly the kind of challenge I love!
